Building online social enterprises @ Cdn Conf on Social Enterprise - Should we do this?
In November, Toronto will play host the the Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise hosted by the Social Enterprise Council of Canada. Our theme is "Living Our Values" and as a result, it will be an embedded conference in various smaller locations around the city - all social enterprises, with SE catering and local support.
I am responsible for developing two workshops for the conference and I need your help.
Workshop # 1 -
Either could be "building online social enterprises" - what works, what do you need to know and why.... examples of these would be Canada Helps, TechSoup Canada and kiva.org. A group like ONN would also probably fit in that their primary function is online... but perhaps not, in that they aren't yet revenue generating. But Charity Village would be another example...
or
"how social enterprises can more effectively use the web to solve their business challenges" - this would be more open to a broader range of SE's... for example, CSI is working to reinvent our customer service offering by servicing our tenants online... this is way beyond marketing.
Okay.... so this is the question for discussion for the first workshop. and who would be interested in attending something like this?
Workshop # 2 -Building Community Resilience through Social Enterprise
The idea for this workshop is to bring successful social entrepreneurs that have achieved a level of financial stability in their own organizations together for an opportunity to explore how we might work together to build community assets. It would explore things like... how do we build a SE Fund from a portion of our own assets? How do we apply our skills & assets to develop loan guarantor structures amongst eachother. How de we better support each other and develop new tools to better serve the sector.
The question here is... who would be interested and what other ideas do you think might becovered in this one?

Okay... I would love some feedback on these two ideas.... bueller? bueller?

Hey there Tonya -- Good
Hey there Tonya --
Good thinking to throw the question out to the community. I'd have to say that the second choice (how social enterprises can more effectively use the web to solve their business challenges) for the first workshop sounds like something that you can speak to directly and with a lot of experience.
"Building (successful) online social enterprises" is something that organizations like Canada Helps, Techsoup, and probably Kiva are all still trying to figure out.
Otherwise, sounds great. Hope you can record it so that we can listen / watch from afar.
Phillip.
