Changes to the Nonprofit Legal Framework in Ontario

One of the main projects of the emerging Ontario Non Profit Network (ONN) is the Ontario government’s recent process to modernize the nonprofit legal framework in Ontario. It’s pretty clear that if the government is going to make changes to the legal framework for nonprofits in Ontario, that we had better get organized… and indeed, that is what is happening.

ONN has drawn together an expert legal reference group which included fabulous minds taking a lead like Pat Bradley, Theatre Officer and Research Manager, Ontario Arts Council; Lynn Eakin, Lynn Eakin and Associates; Brian Iler, Iler Campbell LLP; Janice Wiggins, Project Director, Pro Bono Law Ontario, Volunteer Lawyers Service and others (sorry that I don’t have the full amazing list in front of me).

The Expert Reference Group has been working hard to both make sense of the government consultation papers and to help to develop a response that will serve the small and medium sized public benefit nonprofits in Ontario.

The ONN web site will have it all in one place shortly, but in the meantime, I thought that I would share the Expert Groups Response to the first Consultation Paper.

Although a little dry at first, you will see that we are advocating for our own Non Profit Act, among other things.

Take a look and feel free to let me know if you are keen to learn more about the consultation process with the Ontario government.

The Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN) is a new and emerging initiative to connect the nonprofit sector in Ontario. Envisioned as a network of networks, ONN will serve as a cascading communications system that links and shares information across all public benefit nonprofits and charities in Ontario. From arts to environment, social services to community development, ONN hopes to be a loose network of groups that are able to mobilize when needed on behalf of the sector.
