Youth Apathy or Engagement?
So, are youth apathetic or what? This was the subject for a fascinating panel discussion on youth engagement led by rethos.com and hosted by the CSI on October 17th. The short of it is that yes, voting levels are at all time lows, but it is likely that youth are choosing to increasingly express their civic engagement through nontraditional channels, and particularly online.
An interesting conversation emerged around the concern that online initiatives can be a "low fidelity" form of engagement and risk providing a false sense of actual action and impact. At the same time, there is also a strong belief that online initiatives hold the potential for facilitating mass engagement and collaboration through linking local initiatives to national and international networks.
So here's a question: What is the ideal relationship between "real" and "virtual" civic engagement? Are online social engagement initiatives really just a 1,000 miles wide and an inch deep, or are they the key to allowing organizations and initiatives to maximize impact?
