Generation NGO - youth activism

An interesting article in today's Globe & Mail....it highlights the fact that many "Generation Y" activists are dissatisfied with the formal structure and inadaptability of many traditional nonprofits. An excerpt:

Frontline Partners with Youth Network receives $50,000 grant!

We are absolutely delighted to confirm a $50,000 grant on behalf of our incubated project, the Frontline Partners with Youth Network! This grant has been received from The Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health at CHEO and we are incredibly grateful for their support.

Grassroots Youth Collaborative

The Grassroots Youth Collaborative (GYC) was formed in May 2004 to advocate for policies that empower young people to have a voice and contribute to their communities. GYC is a collective of culturally and racially diverse youth-led organizations that work in underserved, lower-income, at-risk communities where violence, especially youth violence, is regularly in the media spotlight. The programs delivered by GYC members reach out and engage young people who are typically missed by more mainstream youth programming.

Frontline Partners with Youth Network (FPYN) developed in early December 2005 as an expression of the heartfelt need among frontline workers to connect with each other with and support each other in dealing with the effects of violence.

Youth Apathy or Engagement?

So, are youth apathetic or what? This was the subject for a fascinating panel discussion on youth engagement led by rethos.com and hosted by the CSI on October 17th. The short of it is that yes, voting levels are at all time lows, but it is likely that youth are choosing to increasingly express their civic engagement through nontraditional channels, and particularly online.
