CENSE Research and Design

I spend much of my time thinking about the big picture and working with service and social innovation organizations to devise strategies to enhance the way we live, work and play through research and design. My work combines systems thinking, design and behavioural science with the tools of critical education, communications and evaluation. It is my hope that through this work I can inspire people to think in systems, harness their creativity, and design social innovations for public wellbeing. I am the Principal of CENSE Research + Design, a social innovation consultancy studio focused on strengthening clients’ skills in designing innovations and understanding their impact on the world. I am also a faculty member with the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, where I have taught graduate courses in health behaviour change, systems science, health promotion practice, and program evaluation. I hold undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and a doctorate in public health. In addition to post-doctoral training in systems thinking and knowledge translation, I am also currently completing a Masters of Design degree in Strategic Foresight and Innovation at OCAD University. I blog about my thoughts and ideas at www.censemaking.com

Why I do what I do:

I love creating things and helping others solve problems. I am blend of extrovert and introvert and enjoy being social, but also spend much time being contemplative and studying social problems. I thought: what kind of job allows me to pursue my curiosities, teach and learn, and do social good at the same time? Answer: A professor, of course! Well, I've come to realize that there are a lot of people who are not professors doing that same thing without the additional overhead (literally and figuratively). I like to innovate and academia isn't well suited to that. I love to doodle, take pictures, behold art and "mess around" and realized that a lot of others in the public health field do too, but have no vehicle for it. I created my studio, CENSE Research + Design, to provide that space.
