Heather Neville - Labour Doula/Childbirth Educator, Centre for Social Innovation
I am a Certified Labour Doula and Childbirth Educator. As a doula, I offer labour support to birthing women and their partners, helping them to have a satisfying and empowering birth experience. This can include pain management techniques and coping strategies, using breathing exercises, labour positions, massage, acupressure and more. I also have Hypnobirthing™ support certification for parents who choose that approach. No matter what the techniques or preferences of the client, I provide one-on-one, continuous emotional support throughout labour until after the baby is born. I also help couples understand the birth process and facilitate communication between families and health care practitioners, assisting with information gathering and self-advocacy from prenatal to postpartum. As a Childbirth Educator I teach prenatal classes at Women's College Hospital, the Centre for Social Innovation and privately, in clients' homes. Prenatal education is an enriching approach to having a birth experience that is empowering and guided by informed decision-making.
Why I do what I do:
I am a passionate believer in birth as a normal, life-altering process. I feel that we can begin to heal our culture's wounds by restoring women's faith in their bodies' ability to give birth naturally and by working to restore the cycle of breastfeeding. With education, support and compassion every woman can have a positive birth experience and can be encouraged to nurture her children and herself in a way that builds self-esteem and the ability to self-advocate. These attributes can empower individuals in all aspects of life.
