Sourcefabric

I work as the CTO(Chief Technology Officer) of Sourcefabric. We make open source software for media organizations. In the Toronto office we are making "Airtime", software which can be used to remotely manage the audio playout of a radio station. In the European offices we make Newscoop, which is an enterprise content management system for newsrooms and magazines. Just before this job, I worked for Healthscreen, which makes EMR (Electronic Medical Record) software. It's what your doctor uses to store your health records and manage the information flow in their office. I started programming computers when I was eight years old and continued up to getting a Masters in Computer Science(University of Wisconsin-Madison). Since then I have been working at Internet startup companies as a programmer or a team leader. In my free time I like do Tae Kwon Do, hip-hop dancing, meditation, and go to the beach. :)

Why I do what I do:

If you've done enough startups, you learn that many of them do not make it. When you are developing proprietary software, this means that all of your work disappears into the void when the company goes under. Developing open source software means that what we create will live on regardless of whether the organization survives. Open source software also develops a community around it, so it's important to make the development process fun and easy so that others who want to help out have fun too. It also means that people can use the software for things you never could have thought of yourself.
