Sedina Fiati
I am a queer performer (actor, singer, dancer), creator, producer and facilitator for the stage and screen. I believe in art as a tool of expression, social change and joy. I was born and raised in Toronto to a mother from Trinidad and a father from Ghana. My name means "gift from God" in the Ghanaian Ewe language. I am currently a member of two collectives: R3 (Roots Rhythms Resistance) dedicated to raising funds and awareness for decolonization initiatives (for indigenous peoples in North America and Africa) through art and Moyo Wa Africa, reconnecting people of African descent with spiritual traditions and community to promote healing. I am also working on fashion line for cyclists with style. On Wednesdays, I am a desk animator at 215 Spadina with Gil. On the other days of the week, I will be hanging at 720 Bathurst and running all over the city, doing what I do.
Why I do what I do:
I do what I do because I believe that I was put on the earth to make a change and art is my medium. My mother says that I was trying to express myself before I could form sentences and I remember becoming a feminist in grade 6. We live in tumultuous times, but we also have the opportunity to create a new paradigm. Those of us who dare to raise our voices and use our talents to do so must lead the way.
