Pembina Institute

The Pembina Institute is a national, not-for-profit sustainable energy think tank. Our mission is to advance sustainable energy through innovative research, education, consulting and advocacy. This is the story of how it began: In 1982 a group of concerned citizens rallied together in response to the worst sour gas incident in Canadian history – the Amoco Lodgepole Blowout outside Drayton Valley, Alberta. They banded together to successfully fight for a public inquiry and secured more than 80 regulatory changes. Inspired by their success, some of these citizen advocates incorporated the Pembina Institute in 1985. We now have a team of almost 60 staff with a strong presence in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Yellowknife, Toronto, Ottawa, Washington, D.C., and our “home town” of Drayton Valley. We work on four key areas: climate change, oil sands, sustainable transportation and renewable energy.
