Bill 65, Ontario’s proposed Not-for-profit Corporations Act

This is exciting news for the nonprofits in Ontario as Bill 65 recognizes commercial activities and uses the much desired phase 'public benefit' sector to describe the work that we do. But there are a couple of changes that still need to be made.... read below to get the ability to issue 'Community Bonds' made into law....

Be the Change You Want to See

"Be the change you want to see" is a well known motivational phrase. CSI's Director of Programs and Partnerships, Eli Malinsky used this phrase the other day in reference to the way the staff team take care of our wonderful space. I think the sentiment is applicable to a lot of what staff and members do here at CSI, and I wanted to explore it a bit more, especially in relationship to the Live Green Toronto community action project CSI helped to produce.

The sentiment of this phrase includes two great elements:

Bike Parking Takes Over Car Parking

This week the City installed bike racks for 16 bicycles in two parking spots on Spadina Ave. This is a Toronto first. What an exciting moment to see infrastructure built for cars be adapted to the growing demands of bicycles. Although just a pilot, this project exemplifies how we can share the roads. This is what social innovation looks like!

CSI > CSR

Tim Draimin of Social Innovation Generation recently posted an interesting article titled Corporate Social Responsibility is Dead: Long Live Corporate Social Innovation.  The article details an emerging trend from traditional CSR to CSI...

Cities are the embodiment of collaboration, acting as a platform for exchange, a place where culture meets economics meets education meets health meets planning. Cities demonstrate just how connected we all are and how the issues that we are working on fundamentally connect to each other in ‘place.”

Collaborative Consumption

What do Farmer's Markets, Bikeshare Programs, Freecycle and Couchsurfing have in common? They are all examples of Collaborative Consumption. Check out this short video on the emerging trend toward collaborative consumption... while I am familiar with most of the examples they use, I never realized how they could all be tied together and identified as a trend in social innovation.
