What is the Applied Positive Psychology Program?

The Applied Positive Psychology Program (APPP) is a comprehensive, systematic, and progressive certification course offered through HEG that is founded on evidence based happiness enhancement strategies.

The field of positive psychology is a movement away from just diagnosing and treating what is wrong with people and societies, and towards identifying and building what is right. The program was designed to help people reach their natural capacities for happiness through two integrated approaches:

A Class-Based: Happiness Enhancement Workshop (HEW):

The goal is that by the end of the workshop people know as much as virtually anyone on the subject of happiness (i.e., what happy people know and do). The intent is not to tell people how to be happy, but to give them the best evidence based information and strategies (delivered through entertaining presentations, narratives, multi-media, group discussions, and an individualized workshop booklet) so that they might find their own way.

A Self-Directed: Mindbody Happiness Training Program (MHTP):

The intent of the MBHTP is to change the academic understanding from the workshop into an effortless everyday way of being. Both physical activity and meditation have strong links to increased happiness. Since it has been shown that aerobic exercise often leads to the same mental characteristics as mindfulness, walking or running and meditation are combined to form a comprehensive mind-body happiness training exercise—literally rewiring the mind and body towards a happier disposition.

Who is the certification program for?

The program has been shown empirically to significantly increase happiness and decrease depression (in both depressed and non-depressed populations). It has also proven to be a valuable resource for leaders, social workers, mental health professionals, and HR managers (there are a large number of practical strategies that can be applied in a variety of settings). Lunches, materials, and 2-day workshop (including the potential for professional APPP certification—should requirements be fulfilled) are provided.

When and Where?

The workshop will take place on Nov 19th and 20th, from 9am-5:30pm, at 215 Spadina, Level 400, Alterna Savings Room. Cost is $300 and there is a $75 dollar discount for CSI’ers and guests (promo code: social innovation).
