If you're like us then you're behind the curve when it comes to the mobile web (just try to register for this workshop on your iPad).  Which is why the Centre for Social Innovation, with support from TELUS, has organized this day of workshops on February 6th at CSI Annex, 720 Bathurst Street.

Whether you are want to optimize your existing website for mobile, or you are trying to make sense of what mobile strategy is right for you, or you're curious what machine-to-machine might mean in the pursuit of your mission, we have you covered.  These are for you, the social entrepreneur who understands that mobile is important, but has no clue what PHP, SQL or HTML5 even mean.

9:15 - 10:30 - 'Machine to Machine'

Learn and discuss how emerging tech such as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and mobile operating systems can influence this emerging market will impact your business decisions going forward.  
Machine-to-Machine, or commonly referred to as “the internet of things”, is opening doors for businesses across all industries by allowing more and more devices, appliances, consumer electronics, etc. to talk to each other and share data.  How your business engages with this trend and takes advantage of mobile technology can depend on the mobile operating system or ecosystem your work with, develop on or choose to use in the field.

11:00 - 12:30 - 'How to choose the best technology for your mobile strategy: Native Mobile Apps vs. HTML5 or Hybrid' 

Presented by Daniel Patricio of Jet Cooper

 In this session we'll explore the objectives, scenarios, and technology to bringing your product or business to mobile. This workshop is for entrepreneurs looking to choose which route to take in creating a mobile strategy for their products. We will take a user-focussed approach to understand which technology will suite the needs of your users and business goals. There will be breakout exercises using lean activities to understand your product roadmap. 

1:15 - 2:45 - 'Is it Time for Your Website to go Mobile?' 

Presented by Tierney Smith of TechSoup Canada

Are you missing opportunities because your website is difficult to navigate on a mobile device? This workshop will look at:

  • · Should you optimize your website for mobile
  • · What are the main approaches to creating a mobile-optimized site
  • · What are some best practices for mobile design

This workshop is aimed at anyone from a nonprofit, social enterprise or small business with a non-techy background. We're going to focus on the various options for mobile-friendly sites and the pros/cons to consider to make a decision, rather  than discuss the technical details of how mobile-friendly websites are implemented. 

3:00 - 4:30 'How to Bring an App to Market' 

Presented by Breanna Hughes of Xtreme Labs

For a successful app launch, it's not just about pressing one button and crossing your fingers that people download it. There is a lot that goes into ensuring an app is successful in market, both pre, during and post launch. 

For this workshop, we will take you through the things you need to do to ensure you have a successful launch once your product is ready for market. From what tools to use, what marketing and communications need to be aware of, and social media strategies, we will walk through an app launch and arm you with essentials to make sure your launch is a success.
