Our members generate $270 M annually to the economy and generate almost 500 jobs each year. Every day, we work with hundreds of social purpose organizations to help them break down barriers, turn ideas into action that demonstrate new models are possible that prove that we don’t have to exploit, extract and exclude.

We are looking for someone who is recklessly committed to leveraging their enormous skills, smarts and emotional intelligence to having an impact – not just treating the symptoms, but rather getting at the root causes and actually shifting the game.

We are Toronto-based and have strong partnerships provincially and nationally. We operate two legal entities and run TechSoup Canada, a global network providing affordable tech services to the nonprofit sector. We have a combined annual budget of over $10 M.

Position Overview

The Chief Operating Officer will play a pivotal leadership role in leading the next chapter of CSI’s evolution and helping to make the Next Economy a reality. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent leadership skills to drive the implementation of our backbone functions critical to achieving our strategic direction, including: financial, business, digital, facilities, human resources, organizational development and knowledge management systems. The COO will ensure these areas are well structured and functioning to meet current and future needs. The COO will be a member of the Executive Team, providing key leadership support that strengthens our long-term viability and impact towards our mission and vision.

You’re able to develop, communicate and conceptualize digital and financial strategies and solutions.

Leadership: You’re an inspired leader and love to bring out the best in others to help them grow and succeed. Teamwork is in your DNA as you effectively manage, lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team. You are also strong at ‘managing up’ and can bring this experience to bear by actively supporting organizational governance.

Results-Orientation: Able to hold a big vision and jump in to guide implementation and solve problems and achieve results. You excel at removing roadblocks that can get in the way. Simply put, you know how to get shit done to drive the organization’s performance towards its goals, while building strong, effective and collaborative team dynamics.

Key Responsibilities

Financial and Operational Planning

  • Oversees annual operating planning and budget process including setting key performance indicators for both CSI and The CSI Institute.
  • Develops systems for monitoring quarterly performance indicators and works with the Finance Director to prepare quarterly performance reports.
  • Oversees financial risk assessment and analysis, ensuring proper insurance, financial policies and procedures, annual audits, and budget management processes are in place, including the budget planning cycle, record keeping and remittances.

Human Resources

  • Identifies opportunities for organizational culture building by actively engaging staff in the design of progressive HR policies and procedures.
  • Oversees CSI’s performance salary administration, including benefits and compensation benchmarking reviews and makes recommendations for new hires, consultants and replacement personnel.
  • Oversees CSI’s payroll and wellness plan administration
  • Maintains and develops HR policies and procedures that ensure legislative compliance and model CSI’s values
  • Ensures mandatory training takes place and identifies opportunities for professional development that supports organizational priorities.

Business Analysis

  • Leads financial analysis that informs strategic decision making for existing and proposed areas of business including co-working, membership, digital/online and TechSoup Canada;
  • Uses financial analysis to guide investment decisions, develops financing strategies and identifies appropriate financing, business and legal models (i.e., status quo, joint ventures, for-profit or other); and

Digital and Technology

  • Ensures an integrated enterprise-wide approach for CSI’s suite of digital, technology and business management systems necessary to successfully advance the organization’s Digital Transformation Project;
  • Establishes revenue targets for CSI’s digital and technology units, overseeing business modeling and ensures targets are achieved through appropriate planning, management and partner relationships; and
  • Ensures proper digital and technology policies are in place that identify assess and communicate risks, and develops and implements processes and procedures to continuously improve services and programs

Process and Knowledge Management

  • Ensures standardized, enterprise-wide documentation and project management processes and protocols are in place that capture business requirements, identify functional deliverables that produce detailed timelines and project post-mortem reports;
  • Accountable and responsible for systems to support business and data analysis, business processes and progress across platforms; and
  • Ensures compliance with related privacy legislation, regulations and standards that protect CSI and its members’ data and information.

Leadership, Organizational Development and Team Building

  • Direct Reports include CSI’s ‘backbone’ staff team: Executive Director TechSoup Canada and Chief Digital Officer, Chief Community Officer, Finance Director and HR Manager.
  • Supports and guides staff by setting performance goals, conducting regular performance reviews, identifying developmental and operational needs, and providing appropriate training opportunities and mentoring;
  • Fosters an environment of high performance, with an emphasis on service excellence, continuous improvement and teamwork to achieve high standards for the department;
  • Establishes collaborative and effective relationships between Backbone Team and other departments to deliver customer service excellence; and
  • Work with the Executive Team to lead “all staff” meetings, the annual budget and planning cycle, and to design team building retreats.

Governance, Legal and Risk Management

  • Actively supports Board committees and task forces, regularly prepares board materials and works with the CEO and Board Chairs to prepare agendas.
  • Ensures compliance related to managing two operational entities in accordance with their corporate objects, including oversight for intercompany transfers and related decision making.
  • Stays abreast of government policy and regulatory trends affecting the nonprofit, charitable and social enterprise sectors.
  • Develops and maintains the organizational risk management register.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 15 years leadership experience in organizational leadership, systems, knowledge management,
  • Expertise in one or more of the following service areas: social innovation, social finance and/or social enterprise
  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit governance
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and compile complex quantitative and qualitative data for planning and reporting purposes
  • Demonstrated experience managing a high-performing team in a dynamic structure to include professional development and mentorship
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to represent the organization externally across a wide range of stakeholders and constituencies
  • Strong relationship builder with the ability to find common ground, build consensus and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to successfully navigate in a fast-paced, outcomes-driven and entrepreneurial environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness and empowerment

Bonus

  • An MBA or CPA or equivalent academic background would considered an advantage
  • Knowledgeable of the nonprofit and charitable sector work

Estimated Spilt of Time

  • 20% organizational executive leadership – C-Suite level planning, budgeting, board of directors
  • 60% financial, human resources, business and performance leadership and team coordination
  • 20% program and performance improvement design and implementation
